American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

Earn your American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification at the YMCA and prepare for lifeguard employment in a safe, supportive, and hands-on learning environment. This course prepares participants to help keep guests safe and respond effectively during aquatic emergencies.

The YMCA offers both part-time and full-time lifeguard positions, seasonally and year-round. Participants must be at least 15 years old and able to complete a pre-course swim test successfully.

Course Schedule

(Participants must attend all sessions)

Friday: 5:00–9:00pm
Saturday: 10:00am–6:00pm
Sunday: 10:00am–6:00pm
Monday: 5:00–9:00pm

Course Format & Requirements

  • Blended learning course (online + in-person)
  • Approximately 6–7 hours of online coursework must be completed before the first in-person session
  • Online modules include videos and quizzes
  • Participants will receive an email from the American Red Cross with instructions once enrolled

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 15 years
  • Must successfully complete all pre-course swim skills
  • Must be able to attend all in-person sessions
  • Participants who do not meet prerequisites will not be permitted to continue for safety reasons

Certification

Participants who successfully complete all requirements will earn American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification, recognized nationwide.

YMCA Employment Perk: Lifeguarding certification is free with YMCA employment.
