What’s the Story Behind National Physical Fitness and Sports Month?

In 1983, the President’s Council on Fitness designated the month of May as the National Physical Fitness and Sports month.

The goal was to raise awareness of the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle and to help improve the quality of life for Americans.

This year, the President’s proclamation encourages Americans to make daily physical activity a top priority and to pursue physical fitness as a part of their daily routine.

How to Participate in National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

There are so many ways to actively participate in National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Any activity that gets you up and moving is a great start. Here are some ideas:

Hit the Trails

Check out your local park’s walking trails. National forests and national parks are also great ways to find hiking or walking trails that meet your ability.

Hiking and walking are great ways to stay active and enjoy some time in nature. Studies have found that time in nature can help:

  • Combat stress

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Reduce anxiety

  • Improve your mood

  • Boost your confidence

There are trails for all abilities and fitness levels, so find one that you enjoy. Bring your four-legged friend along and the whole family so that everyone can get some much-needed exercise.

Jog in Your Neighborhood

You don’t have to go far to stay active. Jogging around your neighborhood can help you stay active by building up your stamina and strength.

One advantage of this activity is that you don’t need anything but your own two feet to participate.

If you’re a beginner, start by jogging or power walking around the block. Work your way up to a mile and go from there. Continue pushing yourself, and you will be amazed by the results.

Try a New Sport

If conventional exercise isn’t your thing, why not try a new sport? Sports are a fun way to get moving and stay active. They’re also a great way to make new friends.

Here at Countryside YMCA, we make it easy to join a sport that you love. We offer:

No matter your age or level, you’re sure to find a sports program that meets your schedule.

Sign Up for Group Exercise Classes

Group exercise classes are fun and a great way to socialize while improving your fitness level. At the same time, you’ll learn important things about the proper way to move and how to perform certain exercises.

Countryside YMCA offers a wide range of classes, from boxing to Barre, Pilates, spinning classes, water fitness and even nature walks.
