Countryside YMCA will host its first ever indoor triathlon on Saturday, January 18, 2020

Start 2020 by participating in Countryside YMCA’s first Indoor Triathlon on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 6:00p.m.  Participants will swim, spin, and treadmill their way through the event inside the Y. Registration for this fundraiser is $35 and includes a T-shirt, swim cap and goody bag. Anyone in the community who is at least 15 years old or older can register now.

What is an Indoor Triathlon?

An indoor triathlon allows participants to compete in the triathlon events – swimming, biking, and running - without the impact of winter weather. Countryside YMCA is one of the largest YMCA’s in the country and has the facilities for this event. The swim portion will be completed in the Y’s indoor 8-lane competition pool which has 25-meter lanes. The cycling portion will be completed using Precor Spinner Chrono bikes in the spin studio. All running will be done on treadmills in the Cardio Strength Center.

One thing that is different for an indoor triathlon is that events are based on time duration, not distance. Each participant will spend 10 minutes swimming, 20 minutes on the spin bike, and 15 minutes on a treadmill. It doesn’t matter how far you swim, spin, or run during that time. What matters is just that you continue the activity for the duration of that time segment.  There are also transitions between activities. One heat will take 60 minutes, 45 minutes of events and 15 minutes of transitions.

Why try an indoor triathlon?

This indoor race can help new triathletes gain confidence and it’s also challenging for someone who regularly exercises. “Starting the year with an indoor triathlon is great because no matter what your fitness level is, you can spend the year working on improving your time and distance in each event,” said YMCA Fitness Director Jasmine Lee. ”Plus, it’s going to be fun!”

What gear do you need for an indoor triathlon?

If you plan to complete the indoor triathlon, you will need some gear. For the swim, you will need a swimsuit and goggles. Cutoffs or shorts are not acceptable swimwear. You will have time after the swim to change for the bike segment. You can wear tennis shoes or cycling shoes on the spin bikes, and you might want to wear bike shorts. After spinning, you will transition to the treadmill and you will need tennis shoes.

This indoor triathlon is a YMCA fundraiser.

This indoor triathlon is a fundraiser for the Y’s Annual Campaign. Countryside YMCA is a nonprofit with a mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that help build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The Y brings this mission to life by identifying needs in the community and finding ways to meet those needs through outreach programs and financial assistance. These opportunities are funded by fundraisers like this race, and through private and corporate donations, not with membership dues.

“At the Y we work every day to improve the wellbeing of people in our community. I love that we provide ways for people to achieve their goals, like this indoor triathlon. And I also love that this fundraiser helps us provide even more YMCA resources to the community, ” said Chris Johnson Countryside YMCA CEO.
