Background on Water Fitness
Exercise in water provides a near weightless and low impact environment for a challenging yet gentle workout. Countryside YMCA’s diverse Water Fitness offerings can appeal to every Y member, ranging from adults just starting fitness and weight loss goals, to athletes working to cross train, and even for active senior wellness.
Classes are 45-60 minutes long and are led by qualified instructors for ages 13 and up. Classes are structured at Levels 1, 2, or 3. It’s so easy to explore the classes that match your needs and goals today. Not sure where to splash?
- Swimming skills are not required
- Pools have ramps, handrails, and shallow steps

Attire and What to Bring
- Come to class dressed and ready for the pool
- Proper swim attire is required (swim suit), no basketball shorts, street clothes, etc.
- Water shoes are encouraged
- Towel, water bottle
- LEVEL 1: Classes have low impact on joints. These classes focus on flexibility and range of motion but have no cardiovascular training.
- LEVEL 2: Classes offer moderate cardiovascular and strength training in warm water environment.
- LEVEL 3: Classes are high-energy classes with high-intensity strength and cardiovascular training often with water equipment.
Level 1 - Low and Zero Intensity Classes
Senior Ai Chi. Improve range of motion, flexibility and balance in this water exercise and relaxation program. This class combines deep breathing and slow large movements in the water. Held in the Stolle Pool.
Community Arthritis Program. Normal water Arthritis program: for range of motion, flexibility, and mobility. Please consult a doctor first. Classes are sponsored by our Annual Campaign and open to the local community. Held in the Stolle Pool.
Level 2 - Moderate Intensity Classes
Early Morning Workout. Participants do water aerobics, strength training and range of motion exercises. Classes held in the Instructional Pool. Free to members.
Aquasize. Moderate intensity workout, focusing on cardiovascular health, muscle endurance, strength, and flexibility.
Intro to Water Fitness. Beginning level, moderate intensity workout, focusing on cardiovascular health, muscle endurance, strength, and flexibility. Perfect for water fitness beginners. Open to age 18 and up. Free to members.
Senior Aqua Combo. Higher intensity workout using shallow and transitional water to maximize benefits for active seniors. Focuses on cardiovascular fitness, muscle endurance, strength and flexibility. Great for cross training for ages 50 and up. Class held in the Stolle Pool.
Level 3 - High Intensity Classes
H2O Dance Party. Low Impact, water based workout that integrates Pop and International Rhythms with traditional aquatic fitness disciplines. This water based workout provides cardio-conditioning and body-toning of large muscle groups. For all skill levels. Ages 13 and up. Classes held in the Family Aquatic Center.
Liquid Cardio. High-intensity cardio workout in shallow, transitional, and deep water. Class incorporates cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and muscle-toning. Great cross training for land-based exercises. Class held in the Competition Pool. This class is free to members.
Rocking the Waves. High energy water workout with fun music to keep you moving and grooving. This class is Free to Members. Class is held in the Family Aquatic Center.
Water Barre Workout. Our Water Barre Workout is a blend of ballet, Pilates, yoga, body-weight exercises and traditional calisthenics with a splash of cardio mixed in, all done in the water for greater resistance and comfort. Join us for a jam packed barre workout that will incorporate exercises to tone and lengthen while you feel like a water dancer! Class for adults, ages 18 and up. Class held in the Stolle Pool.
Boost your motivation and add variety to your workouts.
Water Fitness Flex Cards. All the Water on your schedule. Water Fitness Flex Cards are good forever. They are good for any water fitness class excluding Community Arthritis. Members must manage card, but cannot share a card. Water Fitness Flex cards are non-refundable and non-replaceable. Only available to full YMCA members.
Water Fitness Personal Training. Participants meet 1-on-1 with a certified water fitness instructor who will create a personal workout program. Members can work on endurance, toning, strength training, flexibility, range of motion, weight loss, cross training or pre/postnatal exercises. By appointment only 30 or 60 minute sessions.
